  • Greetings from the Editor

Since most of our copy is completed within a day or two of publication, our November 6th issue was too close to the elections to publish. As you'll note, this issue's Inane AsylumTM has two parts, pre and post-election columns. Additionally, since there is so much political content to cover, we have omitted features Pet Advice, The Mediocre HousekeeperTM, The Back Page and have reduced our "pure humor" content to a minimum. This issue's Editorial covers the timely concern of what government's role is in serving the needs of the public.

The big news is, of course, the midterm elections and their aftermath. The staff and I viewed TV on election night with great anticipation. We surfed election coverage all evening and found that CNN's coverage had the most creditable reporting and analyses.

During the month leading up to the elections, we were particularly disturbed with the viciousness and acrimony that President Bush and Vice President Cheney exhibited in their many appearances before the public. Many of these were televised, and statements by Bush, Cheney and others, including Karl Rove, not only were without merit, they were flat-out wrong. The attempts by the President and Vice President to paint Democrats with the colors of disloyalty and weakness in our worldwide fight against terror apparently fell upon mostly deaf ears.

President Bush prognosticated, without equivocation, that the GOP would retain control of both houses. His puffery was dead wrong.

TV political host and minor pundit Tim Russert noted many times in television appearances that, in order for the Democrats to win control of the Senate, they would need to "fill an inside straight." As he so commented, his body and facial language implied that such an election poker hand was impossible. He was correct in his assessment that it was like filling an inside straight; he was incorrect in his attitude that it wouldn't be done. With responsible effort and courage, the voters of Montana, Missouri and Virginia expressed the will of the people.

Hopefully, the new Congress will begin to ferret out and speak the truth with increased governmental oversight commitment and honesty heretofore unparalleled during the Bush administration years.

We wish all of those elected success, and, again, implore them to focus on what government's job should be - governing for the benefit of Americans and not for themselves and special interests.

    Our best.

    Thanks For Voting!
